Food Allergies And Anaphylaxis

While not all food allergies cause anaphylaxis, those that do are often very severe and can be life threatening. Food allergies and anaphylaxis is most commonly associated with peanuts. Peanut allergies aren't the most common type of allergy but they are among the most severe. Even a small trace of peanut can cause a severe reaction. Other foods that are among the most common offenders when it comes to allergies are soy, milk, eggs, wheat, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. Of course other foods may also cause problems for some individuals.

If your food allergy has the potential to cause anaphylaxis, it is very important to take the proper precautions. The first precaution is of course to avoid the offending food. This can be difficult, however, because many foods can pop up in surprising places. For example, peanuts may be found in chili, Asian food, various sauces and marinades, ice creams, cakes, cookies, breads and oils. If you are unsure as to whether or not a food item contains peanut, call the company who made it and ask them. If you are eating out, speak to the chef and/or the manager or owner of the restaurant to ensure there are no peanuts or peanut oil in anything you want to order.

The next step is to equip yourself with the proper items to stop a potentially fatal reaction in its tracks. The most common treatment for anaphylaxis is an injection of epinephrine, also called adrenaline. People who suffer from food allergies that may cause anaphylaxis should keep a kit on hand at all times. Keep one on each floor of your home, in your purse or bag, in your vehicle, at work, and at school. You should know how to inject yourself in case a reaction occurs when you are alone. And, people who you spend a lot of time with such as friends or family members should also know how to inject you if necessary.

Food allergies and anaphylaxis can be very serious. This is why you should become as educated as possible on this subject. If you have been diagnosed with food allergies, then you should already have a board certified allergist who is working with you. He or she can provide you with plenty of educational materials and answer all your questions about your allergy and how to deal with it.
