Yellow Food Dye Allergies

The issue of yellow food dye allergy is one that is getting quite a bit of attention lately. This yellow dye is called tartrazine and/or Yellow FD&C No. 5. While most colorants used in foods are considered safe by the FDA, this one has been shown to cause adverse reactions like hives and itching in a small percent of the population. The dyes and colorants used in foods and other products must be listed on the label according to U.S. law. Because of this it is very easy to determine whether or not a product contains this yellow dye.

There are all kinds of different items that may contain tartrazine. They include certain medications, foods, candy, shampoo and more. If you are unsure as to whether or not you or your child is allergic to this coloring agent, speak to a board certified allergist about this issue. If you experience symptoms that you feel may be allergic in nature, such as hives, itching, swelling or eczema, take a look at foods you've consumed in the past few days. If any of them contain this yellow coloring there is a possibility that it is to blame for the problem.

The best thing to do if you think that you (or your child) is experiencing an allergic reaction to any kind of food or food additive is see an allergist for evaluation and diagnosis. There are several tests that may be administered including a blood test and/or skin test. If it is determined that you do have an allergy to yellow coloring, there is an easy fix. All you have to do is avoid this coloring. This means reading all food labels in order to detect the presence of this dye. Eating out at restaurants may be a challenge, because the staff may not know whether or not the dye is present in the food items they use.

Individuals that suffer from yellow food dye allergy are better off shopping for and preparing their own foods. This way there is no doubt as to what you are ingesting. If you've read the label of a food item and you are still unsure as to whether or not it contains tartrazine, call the manufacturer. They will be able to answer your questions and give you more information about the ingredients. Most of the time, if you don't see it on the label then it isn't in there. If you are taking medication that you are unsure about, ask your pharmacist or call the company who makes the medication to inquire about any coloring agents.
